WHO WE ARE

The Center for Global Justice (www.globaljusticecenter.org) is an international network of educators and activists devoted to research and learning for a better world.

SOME OF OUR 2010 ACHIEVEMENTS:

Solidarity economy networking This year we have received and supervised the disbursal of a $5,000 donation from the United Church of Christ Justice Ministries of Cleveland. This donation was for the organic tomato growers of Peñón de los Baños for building rainwater harvesting ponds. We have watched this group struggle through the growing pains of working together, building nine greenhouses and successfully repaying their loan from the Center.

Snowbird and Summer Symposia. Our public education program at the Biblioteca this winter were packed with new and old Center supporters, many of whom say that our programs are one of the reasons they return to San Miguel each year. At least one couple is planning to start symposium in their home town.

Cuba for Professionals and Academics. Our “social sciences” tour of Cuba was a smashing success and all participants returned home to write articles for their local newspapers and are now commited to building North/South solidarity around issues that affect Cuba. We plan another trip for spring 2010.

Building a cooperative movement We completed our first cooperative training workshop with Prof. Santiago Cuevas from the University of Querétaro. The workshop served over 35 people from eight different groups of small producers of various products. The participants also included attendees from the local municipal government who were very enthusiastic. We plan on repeating this workshop in November, and we will follow up the projects that arise from the participants. The town government was so impressed that the new mayor wants to meet with us about developing more workshops on cooperatives for rural communities.
